Still Life

(1881–1940)

Size: 17 3/4 x 24 inches (45.1 x 61 cm)
Medium: Pastel
Signed lower right: Earl Horter
Why We Love It

Still Life speaks to Horter's keen interest in Cubism, as the numerous planes of the pastel layer on top and bump into each other. Horter was not only an artist, but an avid collector of modernist works as well. This lovely picture embraces his eclectic admiration for other artists of the period while proving that he was exceptionally talented in his own right.

The Value

It is a small, but wonderful gem of a painting. In very fine condition, this is a great example of pre-war American modernism.
