Emily Brown captures the natural world with a peaceful yet powerful quietude. Painting in sumi ink, Brown’s timeless depictions of the outdoors communicate a fresh, current perspective. In their fluency, her paintings share the often-overlooked details of nature—the complexity of tangled branches, toppled tree limbs and vanishing ripples on the water’s surface. In a time of uncertainty and unrest, Brown’s mediative art quiets the endless white noise of modern life, freeing us from the barrage of information and media, and bringing us, quite literally, back to our roots in nature. In this intimate selection of recent work, Brown’s compelling use of grayscale recalibrates our eye; subtle gradations of light and dark speak volumes, reminiscent of the effect of Agnes Martin. Though rather than using Minimalism, Brown’s instead pulls us deep within the intricate details of natural forms. Poetic in their vision, tonality, and subject matter, Brown’s paintings transcend what we expect from landscapes, revealing symphonic patterns and the lure of negative space cached within dense forest and fluid waters. Emily (Scott) Brown was raised in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Brown’s unique approach to artmaking grew out of her training at both the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. Through friendships with two of her instructors at UPenn, Rudy Burckhardt and Neil Welliver, she and her husband, photographer Will Brown, became attached to Waldo County, Maine in 1966. Although Philadelphia remained their primary residence, Emily and Will spent their summers in Maine for over 50 years, and the distinctive beauty of the Maine landscape profoundly influenced her work. In 2019, the couple moved from Philadelphia to Garrison, New York to live near their daughter and her family. In her studio, which is nestled in the forested hillside along a stream, she continues to be inspired by the beauty of her natural surroundings. Her work is also owned by many prominent corporate and public collections including Alliance Bernstein, Tokyo, Japan; CIGNA Corporation, Philadelphia; Cisco Systems; Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; Price Waterhouse, Prints and Pictures Collection; Free Library of Philadelphia; and Readers Digest Corporation, amongst many others.
