Avery Galleries marks the 250th anniversary of our nation with our special exhibition It’s About Time: A Celebration of American Art. The title is intended as a double entendre. It’s about time, refers to two significant milestones: 250 years of American art and 25 years of Avery Galleries. While It’s about time, suggests that the importance of American art has been overlooked for far too long.
As with the founding of our nation, Philadelphia has been at the center of the historic America250 celebrations, so too with the art. A Nation of Artists –– a monumental exhibition of American art –– opened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in April and is on view through July of 2027. The show highlights the outstanding creative achievements of American artists and showcases the extraordinary collection of the Middleton Family, with whom we had the honor of working for many years as they acquired the works of art now on view at both museums.
At Avery Galleries, we wanted to put together a concurrent exhibition that demonstrates the broad range of American art we represent; that pays homage to the extraordinary collectors and museums we have worked with over 25 years; that demonstrates how important art is to this nation in the ways it tells us who we are, who we were, and perhaps most importantly, who we can still become.
